Freiburger rechtsgeschichtliche Abhandlungenation of chemicals is highly expensive and with some pathogens the application of chemicals is ineffective. Therefore, it is imperative to develop cultivars resistant to diseases. The resistant commercial cultivars should have other economic attributes to make them viable at commercial level.

Th. Neßelhut,A. Perschl,R. Dietrich,W. Kuhnth the cultivated species of tomato. The protoplast fusion is the best technique to hybridize such species to make use of wild species. It was Cocking who for the first time isolated protoplast from the tomato root in 1960. Since that time tremendous progress has been made in the protoplast culture, regeneration and fusion.

Genetics of , prominence date back to 1905 when Halsted et al. reported the occurrence of single gene mutants in tomato. In 1909, Winkler (1909b) evaluated the tomato cytologically and found it to have 24 somatic chromosomes. Linkage of mutant genes was first noted in 1917 (Jones 1917b).
