描述.This textbook introduces readers to the academic scholarship on the history of childhood and youth in sub-Saharan Africa, with a particular focus on the colonial and postcolonial eras. In a series of seven chapters, it addresses key themes in the historical scholarship, arguing that age serves as a useful category for historical analysis in African history. Just as race, class, and gender can be used to understand how African societies have been structured over time, so too age is a powerful tool for thinking about how power, youth, and seniority intersect and change over time. This is, then, a work of synthesis rather than of new research based on primary sources. This book will therefore introduce mainstream scholars of the history of childhood and youth to the literature on Africa, and scholars of youth in Africa to debates within the wider field of the history of children and youth..

Introduction, childhood and youth in Africa. Beginning with a discussion of the fact that age categories have a history—that definitions of who a ‘child’ is have changed over time and place—the chapter describes the emergence of the field of the history of childhood and youth, emphasising that scholars of childh

The chapter opens with a discussion of histories of enslavement and pawning in Africa more generally, before focusing on precolonial systems of enslavement and pawning. I

As a result, this chapter distinguishes between children’s employment and child labour and seeks to understand why children entered the workforce, the nature of the wo

It begins in the precolonial and early colonial eras, exploring how the age-based structures of many African societies produced tensions between, especially, older and younger men and how those antagonisms changed and intensified under colonial rule. Conclusion, bates over the youth of the continent’s population tends to fall in a binary. Instead, the chapter suggests that the concept of ‘waithood’ better describes life for the majority of young people in Africa—partly because it draws attention to the ordinary lived realities of children and youth.
