This has meant that moderately large optical pumping lasers were required (typically producing 100 – 1000 joules in nanosecond pulses) and that because of the rapid scaling of efficiency with X-ray laser wavelength, the X-ray wavelengths able to be pumped with such medium-sized laser facilites were limited to typically > 15 nm.
