Diversity, stability and maturity in natural ecosystemsanings these terms have been useful in stimulating—and also in muddling—thinking. It now seems that most of the discussions on relationships between stability and diversity lead nowhere, particularly because it is difficult, perhaps impossible, to find direct causal relationships between them, and t

Book 1975of the participating species, often forms a major obstacle. This makes it understandable that ecologists try to abstract general principles from the interrelationships of the multitude of species for use in their efforts to investigate ecosystem dynamics. Such ‘unifying concepts‘ were the main theme

The flow of energy and matter between trophic levels (with special reference to the higher levels)etermine the productivity and stability of the biogeocoenoses (BGC) and the peculiarities of energy and matter transfer. International Biological Programme investigations published recently have provided many data on the structure of BGC. Special attention is therefore paid in this paper to the functional characteristics of ecosystems.

Diversity, stability and maturity in natural ecosystemso explain stability in terms of diversity or vice-versa. This is because both concepts, as they are used, refer to external or peripheral properties of the ecosystem, and any empirical relation between them is a consequence of their common dependence on more fundamental properties of the ecosystem.
