描述The complexity of ecosystems forms perhaps the greatest challenge for natural science. Even the first step to comprehensive analysis, namely a survey of the participating species, often forms a major obstacle. This makes it understandable that ecologists try to abstract general principles from the interrelationships of the multitude of species for use in their efforts to investigate ecosystem dynamics. Such ‘unifying concepts‘ were the main theme of the ‘First International Congress of Ecology‘ organized in The Hague in September 1974 by the International Association of Ecology (INTECOL), under the auspices of the Division of Environmental Biology of the International Union of Biological Sciences (IUBS). This book contains the papers presented at the plenary sessions of the Congress and a summary of the discussions engendered by them. At the Congress over 800 ecologists from many countries, representing diverse disciplines such as limnology, botany, zoology, microbiology, agriculture, met together for a week. The study of ecosystem dynamics depends on mutual understanding and close cooperation, and to stimulate an integrated approach a number of main speakers were invited to contri

The concept of energy flow and nutrient flow between trophic levelsbecause it gives us an opportunity to acknowledge one of the most important, and distressing, characteristics of ecology. Ecology is a discipline that seems to be more concerned with developing concepts than with producing theories. Evidence consistent with this statement is found in most ecological

The flow of energy and matter between trophic levels (with special reference to the higher levels)er trophic levels, by the speed of renewal of dominant populations, by the ability of producers to renew consumed production, and by the relationship between energy required for maintainance and that available for production in the dominant species of different food chains. Such interrelationships d

Comparative productivity of ecosystems: an introduction, few studies are concerned with small animals and microorganisms. The reason for this is, of course, the tremendous and tiresome work of analysing whole ecosystems carefully, both the abiotic factors and their influence on primary, secondary and tertiary biological production. This demands real tea

Comparative productivity in ecosystems—secondary productivityity. The conventional approach, incorporated in the IBP Biome studies, involves collection of data on energy flow and productivity in a variety of ecosystems. These data will be compared—first in related ecosystems, and then in full variety—in search of patterns. The principles will be derived to ex

Factors involved in dynamics of algal blooms in naturessive algal development reaching dimensions of blooms. These algal blooms and their dynamics therefore are major factors in ecological considerations, becoming increasingly acute due to accelerated eutrophication caused by intensification of agriculture and the ever increasing release of urban and i
