Diversity as a function of energy flow of man. A comparable article of faith in economics is the idea of the . or bigger is better with unit costs declining with output. In reality, relationships between input quantity and output benefit, when plotted as . are not ever-rising curves but convex or ‘humped-back’ curves. Which is to say that too much as well as too little is not optimum.

The role of bacteria in energy flow and nutrient cyclingows that of a net primary production of 300 g/m./year, no less than 68 % is broken down by decomposers. The fate of organic substrates broken down has been most extensively studied in bacteria. And as this group of organisms is also by far the most versatile metabolically, the following discussion will be restricted to bacteria.

Comparative productivity of ecosystems: an introductionole ecosystems carefully, both the abiotic factors and their influence on primary, secondary and tertiary biological production. This demands real teamwork, which is often very difficult to establish because of lack of qualified manpower in the various fields, funding difficulties, and sometimes even from lack of interest from the scientists.

The design and stability of plant communitiesin away different from May’s and with land plants particularly in mind, to venture some proposals as to how we might connect our understanding of two kinds of living systems—populations and communities.

Comparative productivity in ecosystems—secondary productivityity. The conventional approach, incorporated in the IBP Biome studies, involves collection of data on energy flow and productivity in a variety of ecosystems. These data will be compared—first in related ecosystems, and then in full variety—in search of patterns. The principles will be derived to explain the observed patterns.
