Pathobiology and aging of elastic tissue,Elastic recoil has an ample amount of importance in the structural integrity and function of blood vessels, mainly of the arteries. The elasticity of various tissues — like blood vessels, pulmonary tissue, skin, elastic cartilage — is due to the presence of elastic fibers.

Electron microscopy of the collagen fibril,oxyproline, forms the basis for the chemical identification of collagen (for review, see 1). An unambiguous physical identification is provided by X-ray diffraction; the helix parameters established by high-angle X-ray scattering are unique to collagen (2).
