Adaptive Structure Projects at the Institute A of Mechanics imbedded in a Collaborative Research Cends range from smart materials and their integration into structures and composites to shape adaptation of aircraft wings, active vibration suppression, and noise control. The project is initiated by the university, supported by the DFG and designed in coordination to related industrial projects.

Damping of Structural Vibrations Using Adaptive Joint Connections and Neural Controlcation example illustrates this so-called semi-active vibration damping concept..The present paper shows that this concept significantly enhances the vibration suppression of a flexible lightweight structure. Based on these results. an adaptive three-dimensional large space structure with adaptive joints is in reach in the near future.

Piezoelectric analysis with FEM and BEMpiezoelectricity are summed up, and the Finite Element and Boundary Element Method are formulated for piezoelectric continua. By means of a numerical example, both methods are compared for the case of three-dimensional transient piezoelectricity.
