Behavioral Consequences of 5-HT1B Receptor Gene Deletion, ment of a number of pathological states including migraine, depression and anxiety (S. et al. 1991). The multiple actions of serotonin are mediated by the interaction of this amine with at least 14 receptors (for a review see S. and H. 1994), most of which belong to the G-proteincoupled receptor family.

Pharmacology of 5-HT2 Receptors,o not activate receptors. A perfect molecular explanation of drug action would elucidate the molecular determinants responsible for cellular regulation processes (e.g. desensitization, internalization and downregulation). At the present time, there are no verifiable models which elucidate these properties for any G-protein-coupled receptor.

Development and Adult Plasticity of Serotoninergic Neurons and Their Target Cells,. The trophic factors involved in developmental processes appear to be similar to those involved in adult neuroplasticity and the maintenance of neural connections. We once spoke of the trophic role serotonin plays in brain development prior to the time it assumes its role as a neurotransmitter in t

Physiology and Pharmacology of Brain Serotoninergic Neurons, years, we have been studying the factors that regulate the functional activity of the brain serotonin system in behaving animals. This chapter describes our research efforts in three subject areas:.Overall, this research has provided us with a unique perspective for drug action on the CNS serotonin

Tryptophan Hydroxylase: Molecular Biology and Regulation, talyzes the first and rate-limiting step in the biosynthesis of serotonin (5-HT, 5’-hydroxytryptamine) (G.-S. 1964 ; L. et al. 1967; J. et al. 1969) (Fig. 1). Within the brain of vertebrates, this enzyme is selectively expressed in the serotoninergic neurons of the brainstem raphe nuclei and adjacen

Molecular Analysis of Serotonin Packaging into Secretory Vesicles, ontrol as well as neurotransmission. In all of these cases, serotonin is released by regulated exocytosis from vesicular stores. The transmitter, therefore, requires packaging into vesicles for regulated release. Indeed, an active transport mechanism functions to translocate both serotonin and the o

Regulation of the Environment of the Interior of Serotonin-Storing Vesicles, ighlighted by the successful use of 5-HT-selective reuptake inhibitors in the treatment of depression (J. et al. 1996; K. 1996), obsessive-compulsive behavior (B. 1996), and panic disorders (K. 1996), as well as the effectiveness of 5-HT. agonists in treating anxiety (L. 1996) and the controversial
