Comparative cytology the third principle of selectivitycts, and bacteria form a series in which the size of average members decreases a thousandfold, then a thousandfold again, whereas molecules (of the size of drugs, vitamins, and coenzymes) are a thousandfold smaller still.

Metal-binding substancesbecause most (or all) of them are toxic in excess. A remarkable specificity has been found: seldom can an excess of one essential metal prevent the damage caused by deficiency of another. In fact, such an excess often increases the injurious effect of the deficiency.

The covalent bond in selective toxicityy covalent bonds which are of a more durable character (see Section 8.0). Covalent bonds involving carbon can be broken by great heat and also by powerful chemicals, but few can be ruptured by mild reagents at temperatures compatible with life.

Differences in distribution: the first principle of selectivityOf the various principles that govern selectivity, that concerned with distribution is (even when its contribution is relatively small) never completely absent. At the other extreme, it can be the principal source of the whole selective gain.

The nature of chemical bonds. AdsorptionAs soon as the forces of distribution (Chapter 3) have brought a drug molecule close to a receptor, the two are sure to be hurled into a fleeting contact by thermal agitation. How durable and how selective that contact may be depends on the chemical nature of both drug and receptor, and on the type of bonds they can form.
