Triterpene Saponins from Maté, ,ntral nervous system, diuretic, and antirheumatic. Knowledge of its chemical composition has remained up to now rather poor. Known secondary metabolites are the xanthines (mainly caffeine), flavonoid glycosides (rutin), and caffeoylquinic acid derivatives (chlorogenic acids).
