Praying: Felicia Hemans at Third Sight,of prayer, Christianity, and conversion efforts in nineteenth-century Aotearoa New Zealand. Hessell’s reading resituates “The Hour of Prayer” in its original publication context to show how it partakes in Hemans’s wider and more overt discussions of faith and the colonised world.

Singing: Global Indigeneity and Robert Burns,30s. Hessell proposes that Kōhere deploys Burns’s songs, and in particular his lament “To Mary in Heaven,” to investigate the links between oral and written cultures in colonised contexts, making use of the similar predicament faced by Scots in Burns’s time.

Healing: Isabella, or The Pot of ,,colonised world in the poem, this chapter argues for an underlying discourse of colonial medicine based around Kumaran’s version of the verses. It demonstrates the importance of debates about Indian and Western medicine in the 1920s, as Kumaran composed his translation.
