Formulating the Research Questions,w the authors came to believe that the early history of school mathematics in North America between 1607 and about 1861 needed to be rewritten—because previous historians had not recognized the fundamentally powerful influence of the cyphering tradition. The chapter closes with a statement of five research questions.

Conclusions, and Some Final Comments,an “ownership” of the mathematics they studied, and that many students who prepared cyphering books proudly used these as reference books for the rest of their lives. The chapter closes with a list of researchable questions, associated with the cyphering tradition, for future investigation.
