Electron-positron pair production in compact sources with energetic protons,. The models assume either spherical or disk accretion onto a black hole or approximate the source as a one-zone region. The steady state pair abundance and instabilities related to pairs are discussed.

Limit cycles in electromagnetic cascades in compact objects,e short time variability of the nonthermal luminosity from a compact object even if the acceleration or injection process is completely steady. Results both from detailed Monte Carlo simulations and from a simple phenomenological model are presented.

Collisional Acceleration of Electrons in Central Regions of Active Galactic Nuclei,ns, and can be a significant supply of non-thermal electrons for typical AGN conditions. If proton cooling in the collisions is included, very flat electron spectra can be obtained, otherwise the electron injection has an index of at least two. This collisional acceleration may be important for AGN pair cascade models.
