Testing the “Defensive Effect” own views in a nasty way, this led first to negative emotions and then to great intention to get politically involved. Civil disagreement did not provoke this effect. Results suggest emotional responses to incivility have the potential to engage the electorate in positive ways if properly channeled.

Introduction: Incivility in Today’s Worldor the main focus of this book, which is how online incivility in news site comment streams influences public debate and political participation. This chapter provides a roadmap for the rest of the book and argues that comment streams have the potential to offer the type of discussions across disagreement vital in a democracy.

Analyzing Comments in the Newsf comments. Results suggest strongly that incivility and deliberation can overlap in comments streams, particularly when the incivility is less virulent. Overall, results point to cautious optimism for the potential for deliberative debate in comment streams.
