描述This book is derived from contributions to the Second International Workshop on Mechanisms in Cell-Mediated Cytotoxicity, held in Annopolis, Maryland, June 10-13, 1984. This workshop was organized by an international committee of immunologists interested in lymphocyte cytotoxic mechanisms (G. Berke, W.R. Clark, P. Golstein, M. Hanna, P. Henkart, R. Herberman, H.R. MacDonald, E. Martz, and C. Nathan), who strove to invite participants who have made major contributions to this field. The Workshop was a follow-up to the highly successful 1981 Workshop, whose proceedings Workshop were published by Plenum as Mechanisms in Cell-Mediated Cytotoxicity, edited by W.R. Clark and P. Golstein. That volume has been much appreciated by researchers and students since it contains accounts of most of the current approaches to understanding cytotoxic lymphocyte mechanisms all in one volume. The present book may be viewed as a follow-up to the first one, and in our opinion fairly summarizes the varying current viewpoints on lymphocyte cytotoxic mechanism. It should be noted that the discussions have been transcribed directly by us, and the participants have not had an opportunity to edit their remark

IgE-Dependent Platelet Cytotoxicity Against Helminthsophils, such as lymphocytes, eosinophils, macrophages and monocytes, the interaction of IgE with its specific receptor on the cell membrane being associated, in most cases, with highly efficient activation processes.

Killing of Gram-Negative Bacteria by Neutrophils: Role of O2- Independent System in Intracellular Kial extracellular killing of bacteria has not been found under normal circumstances. Hence, it is generally believed that intracellular sequestration of the bacterium is required for effective killing by neutrophils (5).

The Cell Biology of Tumor Cell Capture by Activated Macrophageshese receptors, and secretion of one or more injurious molecules to effect target injury and destruction (2,3). This paradigm is consistent with data available in the three systems of macrophage-mediated destruction of tumor cells now studied in some detail. In all three, kill may be divided into two stages: a) recognition and b) lysis (TABLE 1).

A Unified Theory for the Mechanism of the Lethal Hit by Cytotoxic T Lymphocytes (CTL) and Natural Kithal hit has been completed the killer cell can detach and recycle to other targets. Target cells having received the lethal hit are “programmed to lyse” and will rapidly do so during the final stage of the lytic reaction known as the killer cell independent stage.
