描述.This book is a comparative study ofmasculinity and white racial identity in Irish nationalism and Zionism. It analyses how both national movementssought to refute widespread anti-Irish or anti-Jewish stereotypes and createmore prideful (and highly gendered) images of their respective nations.Drawing on English-, Irish-, and Hebrew-language archival sources, AidanBeatty traces how male Irish nationalists sought to remake themselves as aproudly Gaelic-speaking race, rooted both in their national past as well as inthe spaces and agricultural soil of Ireland. On the one hand, this was an attempt to refute contemporary Britishcolonial notions that they were somehow a racially inferior or uncomfortablyhybridised people. But this is alsopresented in the light of the general history of European nationalism;nationalist movements across Europe often crafted romanticised images of thenation’s past and Irish nationalism was thus simultaneously European andpostcolonial. It is this that makes Irish nationalism similar to Zionism, amovement that sought to create a more idealized image of the Jewish past thatwould disprove contemporary anti-Semitic stereotypes..

National Sovereignty, Male Power and the Irish Language, an extended trip to the US, hoping there to gain funds from wealthy nationalist-minded Irish-Americans. The trip was partly organised through the Irish Republican Brotherhood, an organisation Pearse had just joined and his involvement with which would lead, two years later, to his execution..

Organised Manhood,a more ideal image of resurgent Irish manhood that would counter those anxieties. This chapter seeks to show how such anxieties predated the ‘revolution’ of the 1910s and also lasted well into the 1920s.

Regulating Sex, Gender and Leisure in the Irish Free State, tifies the essence of the Israeli ‘fingerprint’ as being determined by state–society relations that predated the formal birth of the state. This led, he feels, to a situation wherein the Israeli state sought to impose its dominance in society by forging alliances with those groups that would help it maintain its initially fragile hegemony..
