Pharmacologic Preconditioning is well known that cerebral preconditioning is one of the most powerful methods of reducing stroke-induced brain injury in animal models. Preconditioning has been used for heart and brain surgery and is now a clinical reality. Pharmacologic preconditioning methods are available to induce brain tolerance and are discussed here.

Tolerance Against Global Cerebral Ischemia: Experimental Strategies, Mechanisms, and Clinical Applic which would otherwise have been lethal. The focus of this chapter is to provide a comprehensive review of the literature on IPC in animal models of global cerebral ischemia. Major mechanisms of ischemia tolerance and the clinical importance of IPC mimetics and adaptations in animals that tolerate ischemia/hypoxia are further emphasized.

Preconditioning and Neuroprotection in the Immature Brainefficacy of preconditioning has not yet been examined in human infants. Delineating some of the common endogenous pathways involved in preconditioning of the immature brain could lead to major advances in the treatment of brain injuries occurring in newborns as well as adults.
