Coordinate Rotation Invariance of Image Characteristicsine which we call “Weyl’s thesis”, we show that the geometrical meanings of involved quantities become clear if the 3D recovery equations are written in terms of invariants. We also see that analytical solutions often emerge themselves. To illustrate this, we apply our method to optical flow analysis and the shape-from-texture problem.

3D Rotation and Its Irreducible Representationsfficult due to the fact that .(3) is not Abelian. Fortunately, a powerful tool is available: we only need to analyze “infinitesimal transformations”. This is because the structure of a compact Lie group is completely determined by its Lie algebra. To demonstrate our technique, we analyze the transformation of optical flow under camera rotation.

Characterization of Scenes and Imagesometrical structures of the “scene space” and the “image space” by means of tensor calculus. Then, we analyze invariance properties of “linear functionals” of images, which we call ., and show how they are used for identification and classification of shapes.

Shape from Textureefinitions of . and . in terms of the theory of distributions and differential geometry. Then, we present numerical schemes for solving the resulting 3D recovery equations. We also give some numerical examples for synthetic data.

Mind and Brain: The Embodied Personand inverses. For this purpose, we present many different representations of 3D rotations—by a rotation matrix, an angle and an axis, the ., the ., and a .. We also discuss topological aspects of .(3). Finally, we derive . of .(3).
