https://doi.org/10.1007/978-1-4612-0573-9Lipolysis in fat cells is regulated at least in part by the intracellular levels of adenosine 3′,5′-monophosphate (cyclic AMP) (1, 2). Cyclic AMP levels in fat cells are increased or decreased by several hormones and chemical agents. The relationships between such agents, cyclic AMP, and lipolysis are illustrated in Fig. 1.

Frank C. Hoppensteadt,Eugene M. IzhikevichThe finding that free fatty acids (FFA) deriving from adipose tissue may represent an important substrate for the synthesis of liver triglycerides (Steinberg, 1963), has suggested the possibility of controlling triglyceride metabolism by affecting the release of FFA from adipose tissue.
