描述The special issue of .Molecular and Cellular Biochemistry.focuses on `Control of Gene Expression by Catecholamines and theRenin-Angiotensin System‘ in health and disease. In recent years, great progress has been made in the understanding of catecholamine andangiotensin II modulated gene expression. There is also increasingevidence that catecholamine and angiotensin II induced cellular injurynot solely arises from classical pathways but also from a perturbedgene expression. .Taking into account that catecholamines and angiotensin II are vitalfor a balanced gene expression of many cells, the intriguingpossibility arises that various disease are initiated or aggravated bysuch an imbalance. Catecholamine and angiotensin II influences can bein excess arising from, for example, hypercaloric food intake orpsychosocial stress. During early progression of heart failure, sympathetic activity and angiotensin II influences also becomeincreased. Due to beta-adrenergic receptor downregulation, depressedcatecholamine influences are expected in the final stage of heartfailure. An imbalanced influence of catecholamines and angiotensin IIon gene expression leads to disordered molecular structures of t

Schlussbetrachtung und Ausblick, transfection of CREB increases the promoter activity of reporter constructs containing human angiotensinogen gene promoter attached to the CAT gene. We also show that co-transfection of DBP (which is a member of C/EBP family of transcription factors) increases promoter activity of these reporter constructs. (Mol Cell Biochem .: 81–90, 2000)

Control of cardiomyocyte gene expression as drug targetdiastolic blood pressure, the diet-induced rise in heart rate was blunted only partially. In addition to drugs interfering with the enhanced catecholamine influence, compounds should be considered that selectively affect cardiomyocyte gene expression via ‘metabolic’ signals. Transcriptional regulation by cAMP in the heartt mechanism for a cAMP-mediated control of gene expression involved e.g. in spermiogenesis and memory/learning processes. This article discusses recent data leading to the hypothesis that this mechanism also contributes to altered gene regulation in heart failure. (Mol Cell Biochem .: 11–17, 2000)
