K. Vismaya,K. Snehal,Bibhuti Bhusan Dashlorophenoxy herbicides. Some organophosphate pesticides (e.g. dichlorvos, chlorpyrifos), pyrethroid insecticides (e.g. permethrin) and triazine herbicides (e.g. atrazine, triasulfuron) are also lightly chlorinated (RSC 1991) but are outside the scope of this work.

Environmental releases of organic chlorine compounds,resence of organochlorines in the environment to emerge. In recent years it has also become apparent that industrial processes are not the only sources of organohalogen releases to the environment (see eg Stringer & Johnston 1995).

Polychlorinated dibenzo-p-dioxins, dibenzofurans and related compounds,olecule remains the same but between one and eight chlorine atoms may be present (see Figures 1 & 2). It is the variation in the number and position of the chlorine atoms that gives rise to the large number of members, or congeners, of the two groups.
