Motor Patterns Dedicated to Sensory Functionsffe et al., 1983, 1984, 1985), but it has metamorphosed into a theoretical presentation which I hope will be of general interest to chemical ecologists and sensory physiologists. The main idea will be brought into focus by describing a survey of experiments reported in Muller-Schwarze and Silverstein (1980).

Behavioral Function and Chemistry of Volatiles from Feces and Anal Secretions of House Mice, ,, - A poses has been reported in a number of mammalian species. In the wild rabbit, ., the territorial function of the secretion from anal glands and feces has been studied particularly intensively (Mykytowycz, 1970), and ethological enquiries have been backed by chemical investigation (Goodrich et al., 1978, 1981a, 1981b).

The Evolution of Chemical Alarm Signals in Fishesitted by injured conspecifics. The known chemical alarm signals in fish belong to this general type of response. Mechanical injury to the “sender” releases chemicals that are detected by the “receiver”. The receiver then responds by performing defensive behavior that protects it from predators.

The Tetrapod Epidermis: A System Protoadapted as a Semiochemical Sourceof circular reasoning. General texts often give the implicit or explicit impression that among vertebrates only mammals . use olfaction. However, the relatively poor performance of . . in this context distorts our conceptualization of other classes. A brief review of available data on chemoreception

Chemical Control of Feeding in Herbivorous and Carnivorous Fish 1982) and there is evidence that the receptor response spectrum is highly species-specific (Goh and Tamura, 1980). This “sensory tuning” or possession of chemoreceptors which have particular sensitivities may form the basis of feeding regulation and feeding niche separation in fishes. Due to the ch

Fish Reproductive Pheromones fish reproductive pheromones, the information which these chemical signals might transmit, and the mode of action by which they are thought to induce the observed reproductive responses. As little is known of many of these aspects of chemical communication in fish, it is hoped that the present arti
