描述The use of cells for the treatment of a variety of diseases is no longer a dream. Today, blood transfusion, bone marrow transplantation, the use of ex vivo cultured skin in wound healing, and peripheral stern cell transplantation, including the ex vivo expansion of hematopoietic stern cells after high-dose chemo/radiation therapy, are routine. This high standard of knowledge and skills in cell transplantation might also re sult in tackling hitherto untreatable diseases. Organ transplantation is presently the only life-saving treatment for a variety of conditions. Important findings in cell and molecular biol ogy, the identification of hematopoietic, mesenchymal and neuronal stern cells, together with breakthroughs in the methodology for isolat ing, purifying, expanding, and storing human cells could make cellular therapy an alternative to organ transplantation in certain diseases within the next decade. Placental blood may be the source of choice in isolating naive progenitor cells for allogeneic transplantation. Immunotherapy is the most hopeful strategy to date for the treat ment of tumors resistant to chemotherapy, radiation therapy, or hor mone therapy. It includes the use

The Immunological Basis for the Development of Tumor Cell- and Peptide-Based Vaccines for Treatmenteful form of treatment to date. Systemic cytokine therapy of RCC using recombinant interleukin-2 (rIL-2) alone or in combination with recombinant interferon-α (rIFN-α) has led to objective response rates of 20%–30% (Belldegrun et al. 1991; Rosenberg 1992). Nevertheless, few complete and long-lasting

Transplantation of Isolated Islets of Langerhans as Treatment of Diabetes Mellitus, dependent diabetes mellitus. Especially if performed in conjunction with a kidney graft it dramatically increases the quality of life of the diabetic patient. The further therapeutic process rests on the hypothesis that the microangiopathy and macroangiopathy would prevent the development or halt th

Neuronal Modulation of the Immune Response in Nervous Tissue: Implications for Neurodegenerative anffective therapy for neurodegenerative or autoimmune diseases. Traditionally, neurodegenerative diseases have been considered as local nervous system processes with no conceivable pathogenic link to inflammatory or autoimmune diseases of the nervous system. However, this view does not explain the lo

Monitoring of Suicide Gene Therapy with Positron Emission Tomography, code for non-mammalian enzymes which convert nontoxic prodrugs into highly toxic metabolites. Therefore, systemic administration of the nontoxic prodrug results in the production of the active drug at the tumor site. Our research center is concentrating mainly on two suicide systems: cytosine deamin
