描述This book offers a comparative and interdisciplinary approach to excitation-contraction-coupling in smooth and striated mus cles, including the myocardium. It is an account of the path ways and mechanisms by which cellular calcium is handled and activates the contractile proteins. It also describes how these mechanisms are adapted in various kinds of muscle to meet specific functional requirements, such as speed or economy. This monograph then presents facts, ideas and theories and the evidence on which they are based, and ifit stimulates others and furthers research, it will have served its purpose. All of the chapters are self-contained and may be read in any order, but readers unfamiliar with muscle are recommended to start with the introductory chapter on excitation and contraction. During all the years of writing this book, I received enormous help from Isolde Berger who corrected, edited and transformed my innumerable notes and drafts into a readable manuscript; she also compiled the list of references and the Subject Index. I owe a great debt of gratitude to her and also to Claudia Zeugner, who prepared the figures with expertise and care. Then I would like to thank the De

The Dependence of Muscle Contraction and Relaxation on the Intracellular Concentration of Free Calcum is the major determinant of contractile activity. What is the evidence? In 1966, Jöbsis and O’Connor made an important discovery. Toad muscle fibres loaded with the calcium indicator murexide turned faintly red upon electrical stimulation just before the fibre contracted, indicating the formation

Diversity of Fast and Slow Striated Muscle,of differences in the mode and rate of activation; however, adaptations in the contractile machinery itself could be equally important. In the following we shall be concerned with structures and mechanisms responsible for slowness or fastness.

Myosin-Linked Regulation of Molluscan Muscle, concentration, however, depends on the kind of regulatory proteins that sense and respond to intracellular concentrations of Ca.. These proteins are diverse. In vertebrate striated muscles, as we have seen in Chap. 4, the calcium sensor is troponin-C, located in the thin actin filaments. In such a

The Vertebrate Heart: Modulation of Calcium Control,e hemodynamic demands. In the beating heart, the contractile mechanism is switched on and off in a most regular manner by the rise and fall of the intracellular free calcium. To understand the control of the myocardium, therefore, we must first consider how the myoplasmic Ca. concentration is kept l

Vertebrate Smooth Muscle, tions. Smooth muscles may be spontaneously active, or they may contract in response to nervous or hormonal stimulation. For example, think of the constriction of blood vessels that may be influenced by sympathetic nerves releasing noradrenahne as a transmitter. Hormones and neurotransmitters exert t
