Teasing out the distinct significance of the letters written by Bodichon, those addressed to her and those that refer to her in the third-person, I point up the methodological challenge of having to study Bodichon’s epistolary Bildung partially by means of how others understood her.

I argue that, in the process, she began developing her feminist understanding of women needing better education opportunities as a springboard to achieving equality.
