,Die methodische Bedeutung der „unlösbaren“ Probleme,. (1775–1856), ein Freund von ., hatte viele Jahre seines Lebens dem Bemühen gewidmet, das Parallelenpostulat von ..) zu beweisen. Die Existenz eines solchen ungelösten Problems in der Geometrie war ihm ein schweres Ärgernis. Er schreibt dazu an seinen Sohn .:
