Focusing Mirror for Coherent Hard X-Rays,beamlines using Kirkpatrick-Baez focusing configuration, reaching 7 nm at the 1-km beamline. The speckle-free mirrors and focusing mirrors were used in XFEL facilities. These mirrors have been applied for various types of scanning nano-probes, imaging system, and generation of high-intensity photon fields for nonlinear x-ray optical experiments.

Angle-Resolved Photoemission,of spin detection enables studies of magnetic phenomena in surfaces and thin films. New developments in light sources, including both lab-based and accelerator based lasers, are allowing pump-probe experiments with photoemission being used to probe the time evolution of systems that have been pumped into non-equilibrium states.

Accelerator-Based THz Radiation Sources,This chapter gives an introduction to the generation mechanisms of THz radiation. The underlying physics processes will be discussed with emphasis on the properties of coherent radiation and the corresponding accelerator and detection techniques.

FLASH: The First Superconducting X-Ray Free-Electron Laser,This chapter reports on the concept of the superconducting accelerator, the generation and formation of the electron bunches needed to drive the single-pass FEL process, and the performance of the FEL. Operation experience and upgrade programs like FLASH II are also described.
