描述This Proceedings is a collection of papers presented at the Third Annual Conference on Superconductivity and Applications organized by the New York State Institute on Superconductivity. This year the Conference was held at the Buffalo Hilton Hotel on September 19- 21, 1989, with previous meetings on September 28-29,1987, and April 18-20, 1988. As in previous years, this meeting was highly successful, with an attendance of over three hundred researchers participating in lively scientific exchanges and discussions. The high quality of the talks is evident in this Proceedings. The field of high temperature superconductivity has matured considerably since its early days of media frenzy and rapid new discoveries. However, the enthusiasm and pace of research have not slowed down. A much better picture of the nature of high temperature superconductivity, the properties of these new materials and where they may find their eventual use has emerged. Processing techniques, especially thin film deposition, have been perfected nearly to the point of allowing commercial applications. Studies of Neutral and Ion Transport during Laser Ablation of 1:2:3 Superconductors by Optical Absorlocity distributions inferred from monitoring excited state plume fluorescence. Ion probe measurements confirm this low velocity component. High resolution emission spectroscopy is also utilized to examine the spectral broadening arising from collision processes in the laser plasma as well as obtain estimates of plasma densities.

Flux Pinning and Microstructure in YBa2Cu3O7imize this problem, Jin et al.. and more recently Murakami et al.. have synthesized grain-aligned bulk specimens which show values J. (~10 A/mm. in applied magnetic fields of a few tesla and at 77 K) significantly larger than those in the sintered materials.

The Electronic Structure of High Tc Copper Oxidesband, either Heisenberg (insulator) or “t-t’-J” (metal) type. These findings have strong implications for the possible nature of high temperature superconductivity; they also need to be further tested against critical experiments.

Tailored Thin Films of Superconducting Bi-Sr-Ca-Cu Oxide Prepared by the Incorporation of Exotic Atoy the structure models, and the correlation between Tc and the lattice parameters is explained by the changes of the distance between CuO. layers, indicating the importance of the interaction between CuO. layers.

Interdiffusion between Sputtered MgO Films and Sapphire Substratestemperatures in the range of 850°–1000°C where interaction with sapphire was appreciable. More recent work. has emphasized processing at temperatures as low as 400°C which significantly reduces but does not eliminate substrate-film interactions.
