Contribution of photosynthetic sulphur bacteria to primary production in Lake Vechtenf total daily productivity in the pelagial zone. The percentage of photosynthetic bacterial production of total annual planktonic primary production calculated for the entire pelagial zone, taking into account compensation for decreasing volume of lower strata, was 3.6% (i.e. 127 against a total production of 3 510 kg C.lake.yr.).

Macro-invertebrate communities associated with the macrophytes of Lake Vechten: structural and functution depended strongly on colonizable plant surface area and vegetation density. The macrofaunal communities of the . and . stands contributed mainly to the lake’s carbon cycle. Being poorly represented by herbivores, the macro-invertebrate communities will affect the lake’s primary production only slightly.

The aquatic macrophytes of Lake Vechten. Species composition, spatial distribution and production to increasing water turbidity, increasing tree-shading and, from 1978 onwards, grazing and trampling by cattle..Production rates, derived from different combinations of measurement and calculation, were compared. The macrophytes contributed only about 7% to the total lake production in 1980.

The phytoplankton species composition and the seasonal periodicity in Lake Vechten from 1956 to 1979e data of 1975–1979 are compared with those from earlier records, distinct changes can be observed. These changes are discussed with reference to the trophic status of the lake. The vertical distribution of some species is described.
