Desiccation, xample are the so-called “resurrection” plants which as whole plants withstand the loss of cellular water and return to active metabolism and growth on rehydration (Bartels et al. 1990). In crop plants, however, desiccation tolerance is important principally in pollination, seed development and germination.

Chilling stress, range of temperatures common to their habitant, injury may occur in a new environment, or when temperature extremes exceed the norm. Of course, modern agriculture and consumer preferences cause crop plants to be grown in regions where it is more economical to grow them, but where they may be only marginally adapted.

Salt stress,ea water may mix with and salinate “sweet” irrigation water stemming from inland sources. A better understanding of the physiological and molecular mechanisms by which salinity and water deficits inhibit the growth of crop plants could help the future selection of genetic engineering of more tolerant varieties (Newmann 1993).

,Anaerobic stress — flooding and ice-encasement, covered by snow during the winter, which does not block gas exchange itself, but if the snow melts, ice sheets may form on the soil surface. In addition, vegetative growth from the previous season can be compacted by the snow to smother the roots and buds underground.
