Carbon Isotope Fractionation and Plant Water-Use Efficiency increase in the rate of CO. assimilation, ., but also allows a greater rate of transpirational water loss, .. Such an action by a plant is a gamble, because while it increases the likelihood of growth and reproductive success, it also increases the probability of desiccation and death (Cowan 1986).

Doubly-Labeled Water Studies of Vertebrate Physiological Ecologyve been used are tritium, which is radioactive and is denoted as .H, H-3, or T, and deuterium, which is stable and is denoted as .H, H-2, or D. Oxygen-18 (.O or O-18) is the oxygen isotope of choice. Oxygen-17 could be used but adequate measurement technology for its use in DLW studies on animals has not yet been developed.
