描述This is a collective volume on Soviet-American relations with the three rimland states of Iran, Afghanistan and Pakistan. The contributors argue that what happens in these three states would ultimately affect the states in the Gulf and the Middle East. The USA maintains friendly relations only with Pakistan, while her relations with Iran and Afghanistan are antagonistic. The future penetration of the Soviet influence in Iran and Afghanistan is assessed and probable scenarios are discussed by the seventeen contributors, who represent the military, diplomacy and academia. The concluding chapter synthesizes the discussions and the criticism of various papers. The book is the most up-to-date thorough analysis of superpower relations with the three neighbouring states of the Soviet Union currently available.

Relations between Iran and the Arab States, untries. East of that divide is the great Iranian plateau, the heartland of Persian civilization. To the west of it is the vast Tigris—Euphrates river basin and great deserts beyond and in between, peopled by Semites. The basin has been dominated for 1400 years by Arab and Turkish rulers. It has been peopled by Semitic speakers long before that.

The Strategic Importance of Iran, Afghanistan and Pakistan to the United States, asteland — to another. In a world polarized in a global struggle between Communist and anti-Communist nations, gaining the cooperation or the ability to control even the least strategically important nations might be considered a liability. Ethnic Dilemmas in Pakistan, Iran and Afghanistan as Security Problems, and national borders which cut across local ethnic groups in all directions. As elsewhere, these legacies of the past in current practice make ethnicity a security problem. The problem is usually conceived of as one of artificial frontiers. But ethnic identities pose issues which transcend frontier
