Laser Amplifier, system, as shown in Fig. 4.1. In this scheme an amplifier is driven by an oscillator which generates an initial light pulse of moderate power and energy. In the power amplifier with a large volume of active material the pulse power can grow, in extreme cases, up to 100 times.

Mode Locking, the length of the cavity, which determines the pulse length. Ultrashort pulses with pulse widths in the picosecond regime are obtained from solid-state lasers by mode locking. Employing this technique, which phase-locks the longitudinal modes emitted by the laser, the pulse width is inversely related to the bandwidth of the laser emission.
