描述This book focuses on the nature and properties of soils of Hindu Kush-Himalayas and their management for agricultural land use. It discusses all aspects of climatic variations and potential of resources in the Himalayan region  including examples from Afghanistan, Bangladesh, Bhutan, China (Tibet), India, Myanmar, Nepal and Pakistan. Chapters cover the geology of the parent material of native soils, soils microbes, flora and fauna. Soil classification has been given in detail to better understand the nature of soils for judicious management strategies. The authors present land use practices and suggestions for changes in land use to benefit from the full potential of the soils in this region. Their ultimate aim is to find ways of feeding the ever-increasing population and raising the standard of life for the people living in the Himalayan mountain region. .

Climate and Biodiversity, scarcity of basic hydro-meteorological observations particularly in high-altitude regions of HKH limits rigorous analysis of climate change. The temperature in the HKH undergoes a significantly increasing trend, and the warming rate is greater than the global change. Thus, the elevation-dependent wa

Soils of HKH Region, Himalayas are diverse in character depending upon altitude, vegetation cover, slope, structure, and stage. The major soils groups in the Himalayas are brown hill soil (600–1700 m amsl), sub-mountain soils (formed under dense forest cover), mountain meadow soils (found in alpine and subalpine zones

Land Use and Management, rvices further constrain agricultural development in the mountains of HKH. The farmers across the HKH region practise subsistence farming that depends on forest resources. This is mostly due to severe climatic conditions and lack of market facilities. Improper land use and climate change have increa
