The Life Course as an Institution,e temporal dimension of life. This new temporal mode of socialization leads, as an indispensable correlate, to a biographization of the shaping of life. Both moments stand in an irrevocable relationship of tension to each other.

Life Course Research: A Conceptual Perspective, cannot justify sociological life course research as an independent field of research. Subsequently, the two basic analytical concepts of life course research (“transition” and “trajectory”) are dealt with; their discussion shows that they need to be supplemented by a third basic concept (“turning point”).

Structures of the Life Course,ith the emergence and socio-structural preconditions of the standardized “normal life course”. Finally, the chapter deals with the de-standardization tendencies that have been observed since the 1980s and the corresponding changes in life course patterns.

Life Course Research, Quo Vadis?,ical social research as a whole (a quasi-lethal success). In recent years, there seems to have been a growing realization of the need for an elaborate life course theoretical core of sociological life course research.

The Life Course as a Social Construction, genuinely sociological concept of the life course. Sociological life course research understands the life course in the sense of a social construction. This fundamental sociological understanding of the life course – which is alien to everyday thinking – is illustrated by a few examples.
