描述In June 1975, the distinguished Harvard entomologist Edward O. Wilson published a truly huge book entitled, Sociobiology: The New Synthesis. In this book, drawing on both fact and theory, Wilson tried to present a com prehensive overview of the rapidly growing subject of ‘sociobiology‘, the study of the biological nature and foundations of animal behaviour, more precisely animal social behaviour. Although, as the title rather implies, Wilson was more surveying and synthesising than developing new material, he com pensated by giving the most thorough and inclusive treatment possible, beginning in the animal world with the most simple of forms, and progressing via insects, lower invertebrates, mammals and primates, right up to and in cluding our own species, Homo sapiens. Initial reaction to the book was very favourable, but before the year was out it came under withering attack from a group of radical scientists in the Boston area, who styled themselves ‘The Science for the People Sociobiology Study Group‘. Criticism, of course, is what every academic gets (and needs!); but, for two reasons, this attack was particularly unpleasant. First, not only were Wilson‘s ideas attacked, bu

The Biological Background, viously, I do not want to introduce the whole of biology, but rather those aspects which have some bearing on sociobiology. Therefore, the guiding thread at this point will be the nature of sociobiology and the way in which it is supposed to relate to the rest of biology. Possibly, some readers inte

The Sociobiology of Animals,in turn the subjects of aggression, sexuality, parenthood, and altruism. Although this will not exhaust the sociobiological ., it will be fully representative. Inevitably, there will be some overlap, because the topics chosen are by no means fully separate.

Normative Criticisms,ambridge-based Sociobiology Study Group of Science for the People. (Allen .., 1976, 1977.) However, we know also that, since the initial outbursts, more temperate critics have appeared, particularly — of all people — the anthropologist Marshall Sahlins (1976). No doubt, nothing stirs one to action q

Epistemological Criticisms, riticisms of a rather different kind: criticisms which purportedly show that sociobiology is a pseudo-science because it has various conceptual or methodological defects, either internal to the subject itself or as it relates to external reality. As before, when once a criticism has been introduced,

The Positive Evidence,. When asked why anyone should accept his theory of evolution through natural selection, he used to reply that there were three reasons. First, there was what we might call the . evidence from the struggle for existence and the undoubted variation in the wild. Second, there was the . evidence, from

Sociobiology and the Social Sciences, iobiology frozen at some point in time (the present!) and trying to evaluate its worth. In this chapter, I want to consider matters from a ‘dynamic’ viewpoint: that is to say, I want to see how things could develop through time, from the present to the future. In particular, assuming that human soci

Sociobiology and Ethics, rounded on evolutionary theorizing. One thinks here specifically of Charles Darwin’s contemporary, Herbert Spencer, who more than anyone drew tight bonds between evolution and ethics; although, given Spencer’s present reputation, whilst philosophers think of Spencer as primarily a biologist, no doub
