No one has failed to experience the overpowering urge to fall asleep after a disturbed night‘s sleep or after sleep was curtailed or deprived, especially when our daily activities impose restrictions on motor activity. The demand ofour body and brain to sleep challenges our understanding ofwhy this is the case, and which are the benefits ofa night ofprofound sleep. Neurobiology of the sleep-wake cyclend in birds and mammals. In the case of the latter, sleep presents as an alternation between two main states, NREM (non-rapid eye movement) sleep and REM (rapid eye movement) sleep, whose respective quantities and rhythms are characteristic for each species.

Guidelines for visual sleep analysisis are being developed may seem more like the work of a palaeontologist than a physiologist. Nevertheless, visual analysis will continue to be an indispensable tool for some time to come, if only to serve as a basis for verifying the analyses produced by computerised methods.

Melatonin and sleep-wake rhythmole of melatonin in man is only partially understood and certain data are open to question. Indeed, due to its lack of any known short term toxicity, the substance has been subject to a multitude of studies which are either uncontrolled or involve doses generating blood concentrations far higher tha
