Single Event Phenomena II, of the effects of a device exposed to an ionizing dose of radiation prior to and/or during the occurrence of an SEU. The ionizing dose is usually construed, but not exclusively, as that from gamma rays, X-rays, protons, or electrons, corresponding to the particular hostile or benign environment in which the device finds itself.

Extraterrestrial SEU-Inducing Particles,cs. These particles include heavy cosmic ray ions of galactic origin. Other cosmic ray particles include the pion and muon groups of mesons. They are secondary particles produced by the interaction of incident cosmic rays with the earth’s atmosphere. Generally, the meson flux is greater than that of cosmic rays near the ground.

Particle Penetration and Energy Deposition,omena (SEP). This is because of the incident particle energy transfer to the device material to ionize it and thus release extraneous charge, which can ultimately be collected by memory nodes to produce SEU and other SEP.
