描述Shallow lakes differ from deep ones in many aspects of nutrientdynamics, biotic structure and interactions of various trophic levels.Though very common in European lowlands, shallow lakes attractinadequate attention from research teams. This book aims at fillinggaps in our knowledge of the processes which take place innon-stratified lakes. It contains proceedings from the internationalconference `Shallow Lakes *95‘ held in Mikolajki, Poland, on20-26 August 1995. In more than 50 original papers up-to-dateviews on eutrophication, degradation and recovery of shallow lakes arepresented. .The first four sections of the book (Nutrient fluxes, Bioticstructure, Trophic interactions and Whole lake studies) deal withtheoretical aspects of lake functioning while the fifth(Biomanipulation, restoration and management) is devoted to practicalmeasures undertaken to improve water quality in shallow lakes. Thebook is therefore addressed to university biologists and ecologistsand PhD students, as well as to managers involved in restoration ofshallow lakes. .

Significance of subfossile chironomid remains in classification of shallow lakesiving larvae. The relative species composition between the three sample types varied considerably. Samples of living larvae showed a high degree of variation within the lake while surface sediment samples of subfossile chironomid remains seemed to be a persistent and reliable tool in classification of shallow lakes.

Phosphorus release in Lake Großer Müggelsee and its implications for lake restoration area. Despite efforts in phosphorus (P) loading reduction in the inflow, this polymictic lake still demonstrates an year-to-year fluctuating and strong internal P loading with increasing pore-water phosphate concentrations during summer due to formation of anoxic microlayers at the sediment surface
