描述Sentimentalism, Ethics and the Culture of Feeling defends feeling against customary distrust or condescension by showing that the affective turn of the eighteenth-century cult of sentiment, despite its sometimes surreal manifestations, has led to a positive culture of feeling. The very reaction against sentimentalism has taught us to identity sentimentality. Fiction, moreover, remains a principal means not just of discriminating quality of feeling but of appreciating its essentially imaginative nature.

Friedrich Schiller and the Aestheticizing of Sentiment,re, is at best a potentially misleading shorthand and, since feeling in itself is not merely unreliable, but is actually outside the realm of the ethical, it is dangerous to accept it even as a supplement to the ethical which it may actively undermine.

Introduction: the Transformations of Sentiment, haviour implicitly rely on feeling while the prevailing discourse distrusts it. During the all-Ireland referendum in 1998, which sought a lasting settlement for that country’s historical divisions, politicians seeking a ‘yes’ vote exhorted the people to put their feelings on one side and vote ration

Feeling and/as Fiction: Illusion, Absorption and Emotional Quixotry,he theories of sympathy increasingly defined it as a response to imagined objects so it took on the character of an internal fiction. Meanwhile the inherent instability of sentiment left the pros and cons of the debate largely unresolvable in the abstract, as it has remained ever since. Each side sp

Victorian Sentimentality: the Dialectic of Sentiment and Truth , Feeling, ntimentality. Victorian sentimentality is a byword for indulgent and lachrymose excess, and the reaction against it, as encapsulated in Oscar Wilde’s remark that it would take a heart of stone to read the death of Little Nell without laughing, was crucial to many writers of the modernist generation.

Feeling as Illusion: Rousseau to Proust, inct from the continental myth of romantic passion as illusory and in conflict with social being. It is a passional ethic and is therefore different from other forms of romantic myth which incorporated the impact of eighteenth-century sentiment.
