Basic Concepts and Phenomenological Description,i and electrons interacting by Coulomb and spindependent forces; henceforth, however, the latter will be disregarded and we confine ourselves to non-relativistic theory. All particles are treated as mass points; the system is supposed to be isolated (no external forces).

Transitions between different electronic states can be accounted for only by going beyond the adiabatic approximation; the main goal of the theory of non-adiabatic processes is to calculate the probabilities of such transitions.
