描述This volume contains 18 papers from 8 countries dealing with different aspects of triggered and induced seismicity. In situ observations of the phenomenon include examples of seismicity due to reservoirs, hard-rock mines, coal mines, mine collapses, brine production caverns, fluid injections, and geothermal hot-dry-rock projects. High-frequency acoustic emission studies from laboratory experiments and hard-rock mines have also been reported. Besides providing case studies of previously unavailable observations of seismicity, the present volume contains investigations of the causes and source mechanism of seismic events, determination of source parameters, seismic hazard as related to the design of support systems for underground openings and procedures for closure of brine production caverns, and the use of seismic and non-destructive techniques in assessing rock damage, measuring dynamic elastic moduli and detecting discontinuities. This collection of papers provides an excellent indication of the state of the art, recent developments and outstanding challenges facing scientists and engineers in understanding the causes and alleviating the effects of induced seismicity.

Scaling Laws for the Design of Rock Support,some distance from the source, are developed, based upon theoretical considerations and supported by a world-wide database. These scaling laws reflect the most relevant, critical conditions for engineering design.

Seismic and Aseismic Slips Induced by Large-scale Fluid Injections,er than the slip motion associated with microseismic events, as evaluated from events’ magnitude. It is concluded that these observed slip events were aseismic. This implies that induced seismicity is not a good marker for the efficiency of this hydraulic stimulation. It only helps to identify zones of high pore pressure during injection.

Predisposition to Induced Seismicity in Some Czech Coal Mines,s represented by shaft and/or crosscut safety pillars and various types of remnant pillars. All the cases discussed show that many focal zones are generated in overstressed strata as a consequence of interaction of natural conditions and/or old workings with the active coal face.

Spatial Distribution of Mining Tremors and the Relationship to Rockburst Hazard,strated between the location of events, the changes in the state of stress in the massif during the mining operations and the configuration of exploitation. The results have opened interesting perspectives into the analysis of the spatial distribution of mining tremors and their relations to rockburst hazard.
