描述A representation of objects by their parts is the dominantstrategy for representing complex 3D objects in many disciplines. Incomputer vision and robotics, superquadrics are among the mostwidespread part models. Superquadrics are a family of parametricmodels that cover a wide variety of smoothly changing 3D symmetricshapes, which are controlled with a small number of parameters andwhich can be augmented with the addition of global and localdeformations. The book covers, in depth, the geometric properties ofsuperquadrics. The main contribution of the book is an originalapproach to the recovery and segmentation of superquadrics from rangeimages. Several applications of superquadrics in computer vision androbotics are thoroughly discussed and, in particular, the use ofsuperquadrics for range image registration is demonstrated. ..Audience:. Extensions of Superquadrics,ng require just a few additional parameters in the superquadric equations. Local deformation, in general, overlay the original superquadric with a new parameterization grid which enables local change of shape. Therefore, local deformations are by its nature not tightly integrated with superquadrics

It is also important that the recovery method signals when the models are inadequate to describe the data, so that a different type of model can be invoked.
