描述The book takes as its theme the relationship between literature and the contemporary means of production and distribution collectively termed ‘the media‘ - in particular, film and television. The intention of the book is to explore and evaluate the mutual opportunities and restrictions in this relationship. In the grammar of our culture there seems to be an accepted opinion that print is superior in terms of cultural production to film, radio or television, that to read a book is somehow a ‘higher‘ cultural activity than seeing a play on television or seeing a film. By the same token, a novel is a ‘superior‘ work of art to film or television. The longer perspective reveals that traditionally there always is a greater respect paid to the previous mode of literary production - poetry was superior to drama, poetic drama was superior to the novel, and film attained cult and classic status initially over television.

The Classic Serial Tradition, take on the task of bringing Boz to such a wide public might not seem incongruous, as Dickens himself was so obviously assisted — indeed to a large extent actually shaped and conditioned — by the mass media of earlier generations.

Case Study: The Production of ,lizations has developed. One of the things that particularly interested us was to try to discover whether, if there were such a thing as a BBC ‘house style’ for Classic Serials production, this would run the risk of subsuming the distinctive voices of individual novelists into a continuing monotone of costume dramas.

The Literature/Screen Debate: an Overview,ed and discussed, with particular reference to the adaptation or dramatization. of prose fiction into the medium of film and television. The majority of the issues discussed refer equally to film and television, since the concern is generally with the ‘visualization’ of the prose text; however, cert

The Re-creation of the Past, out of this discussion was the question of the audience’s historical relationship to the text. This is something which becomes increasingly important as we move further from theory into practice, for, of the many thousands of novels available to the programme- and film-maker, the nineteenth-century
