描述.Scanning Tunneling Microscopy II., like its predecessor, presents detailed and comprehensive accounts of the basic principles and the broad range of applications of STM and related scanning probe techniques. The applications discussed in this volume come predominantly from the fields of electrochemistry and biology. In contrast to those in STM I, these studies may be performed in air and in liquids. The extensions of the basic technique to map other interactions are described in chapters on scanning force microscopy, magnetic force microscopy, and scanning near-field optical microscopy, together with a survey of other related techniques. Also discussed here is the use of a scanning proximal probe for surface modification. Together, the two volumes give a comprehensive account of experimental aspects of STM and provide essential reading and reference material. In this second edition the text has been updated and new methods are discussed.

Introduction,In the first volume on scanning tunneling microscopy (STM) [1.1], the main focus was on STM as a novel powerful technique in surface science. Applications of STM to a wide variety of materials were described with an emphasis on ultrahigh vacuum (UHV) studies.

The Scanning Tunneling Microscope in Biology,Since its beginning the scanning tunneling microscope (STM) has stirred up excitement amongst biologists. The prospect of peering into the finest details of biomolecular structures with a method thought to be non-damaging is, of course, exhilarating.

Nano-optics and Scanning Near-Field Optical Microscopy,The previous chapters have dealt mainly with scanning probe microscopies based upon the transport of electrons and upon static fields (forces).

itional ideological structures have been thoroughly disrupted by the emerging conceptual framework of what could be termed ‘the global imaginary’. From this perspective, it is no longer useful to think in conventional ideological terms - which were coined for the bygone era of cultural homogeneity,
