描述In one of the more sudden shifts of perspective, and hotly contested controversies of recent historical and literary scholarship, our view of Johnson has been fundamentally changed. This volume offers the best up-to-the-moment account of what has been achieved, and points to the new directions in which scholarship is developing. It will be essential reading for all concerned with eighteenth-century studies.

‘Elevated Notions of the Right of Kings’: Stuart Sympathies in Johnson’s Notes to Richard H notes on .. These notes are fragmentary and sometimes difficult to interpret, but they nevertheless suggest that Johnson was substantially more sympathetic to the Stuarts, up to and including James II, than supporters of the Hanoverian Johnson have been willing to admit.

He wrote of ho

Religion and Political Identity: Samuel Johnson as a Nonjuror to provide standards by which his age might be judged. This belief has strengthened the assumption that he stood aside from the conflicts of his day, an Olympian above personal commitment to any merely local and temporary cause. One effect of replacing him in his historical context is to deflate th

Tory and Whig ‘Patriots’: Lord Gower and Lord Chesterfieldby a study of two men whose lives touched Johnson’s own. The careers of Lord Gower and Lord Chesterfield illustrate that early eighteenth-century politics were constructed along party lines expressing a Whig vs. Tory dichotomy. There was political fluidity, for people could change sides in response

Samuel Johnson, Thoughts on the Late Transactions respecting Falkland’s Islands, and the Tory Tradital life. However, they were an important dimension, and consideration of them is instructive. Such consideration is particularly important as Britain emerged as a leading world power during the century. Protracted periods of conflict played a major role in British society and any approach to British
