Ecological Notes on Sago in New Guinea,wales and swampy mountain valleys. It occurs naturally from sea level to approximately 1000 m altitude, but has probably spread widely beyond its natural range through planting. Sago grows on silt, clay and peat of alluvial plains and backswamps as well as on sand in some coastal localities, and on sites that are fresh or slightly brackish.
