Rome and the Irish Catholic Community in the Eighteenth Century, 1691–1789ruction of Irish Catholic ecclesiastical structures after 1691 and the political development of the Irish Catholic community, which involved lengthy debate about the pope’s temporal powers. Overall, the essay argues for a re-evaluation of Rome’s relationship to the Irish Catholic community in the “long” eighteenth century.
