Leading the Workers, Leading the Peasants: The Russian Revolution 1897–1921ics they chose to defend that revolution forced them to break with those workers. Compensation came from an unlikely source, the bitter experience of civil war. During the fighting, after many false starts, they learned to lead a peasant partisan war, a revolution of a new type, a twentieth-century revolution.
